Kansas City–based artist Steven Dragan brings together the disciplines of architecture and painting to create contemporary works centered on the human form, leisure, and the spaces people inhabit.

Dragan’s artistic language developed alongside his career in architecture. After earning a Master of Architecture from the University of Kansas in 2009, he spent a decade leading an international design studio, developing a refined understanding of perspective, composition, proportion, and visual storytelling. These principles remain fundamental to his paintings, but are translated through a much more immediate and expressive process.

His signature compositions are built from rapidly rendered figures and simplified forms, inspired in part by the figure studies and spontaneous architectural sketches he developed early in his practice. People become both subject and structure - arranged in rhythmic patterns that suggest moments of rest, interaction, solitude, and movement.

What initially appears to be a detailed scene reveals itself at closer range as a sophisticated vocabulary of deliberate brushstrokes. Working primarily in heavy-body acrylic, Dragan builds his paintings in layers, mixing colors by hand and continually refining the surface. The tension between architectural precision and painterly spontaneity gives the work its distinctive character.

Dragan is particularly interested in what happens when an image leaves room for the viewer. His figures are intentionally reduced to essential gestures, allowing each collector to discover relationships, narratives, and familiar experiences within the composition. In this way, the paintings become less about depicting a specific moment and more about the human instinct to find meaning in what we see.

Dragan maintains a public-facing studio in Kansas City’s Crossroads Arts District and exhibits nationally. His work is held in numerous private, corporate, and institutional collections, including the Federal Reserve Bank of the United States and American Century Investments.
